Meet Dr Malonda Makanda

Dr Malonda Makanda is a specialist obstetrician and gynaecologist registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA). He became a Fellow of the College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of South Africa (FCOG) in October 2025 and is completing his Master of Medicine (MMed) in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Cape Town.

His path into the speciality began in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where he qualified as a medical doctor at the University of Kinshasa in 2008 and worked in general practice. After completing his internship at Pholosong Hospital in Gauteng, he did his community service at Job Shimankana Tabane Hospital in Rustenburg and stayed on for a further six years as a medical officer in obstetrics and gynaecology. There, he managed patients through pregnancy and birth and performed both major and minor operations, while also covering the labour ward and gynaecological emergencies on call.

From 2022 to 2026, Dr Makanda trained as a registrar with the University of Cape Town, working at Groote Schuur Hospital and New Somerset Hospital. Much of his obstetric work also took place at Mowbray Maternity Hospital. His training centred on high-risk obstetrics, labour ward care, obstetric ultrasound and emergency gynaecology, alongside regular theatre work. He also took part in maternal and perinatal review meetings and taught junior doctors and medical students. In November 2025, he received the University of Cape Town's Peter Roos Award, a certificate recognising professional conduct.
